Kia ora Hannah,

Welcome to the September issue of our Todd Energy Community Focus digital newsletter. We hope this update finds you and your families well and enjoying the slightly longer days and warmer weather as we head into spring.

In July, I managed to get over to Calgary to visit the Todd Energy Canada team who have been extremely busy over the last couple of years completing the Birch expansion project. This has been a huge piece of work over two years in the making, and it is extremely pleasing to have drilled, completed, stimulated, and flowed the first eight wells, both on budget and exactly to the July 2024 schedule commitment.

Closer to home, our Todd Energy-owned Big Ben drilling rig continues to complete some third-party geothermal drilling in the central north Island. At the time of writing this, we are halfway through the third geothermal well, which is expected to be completed by the end of October. Once complete, Big Ben will return to Taranaki to drill OMV's POW-5 infill well out at Pohokura, with drilling expected to commence in November. Here in Taranaki, our Todd Energy team are working toward the commencement of our Mangahewa D drilling programme, which may commence in the first quarter of next year. I look forward to being able to provide a further update on work in Q4.

Last month, I was part of a cross-industry group that met with the Minister for Resources and Associated Minister for Energy, Hon Shane Jones, in Wellington. Topics of discussion including the need for urgent action to help grow New Zealand’s 2P reserves and ongoing concern about the slow legislative timetable and associated processes, which are not proceeding with the necessary urgency given the current energy crisis. This is a conversation I expect will continue for some time yet.

Finally, some advance end-of-year notice for your calendars: we are looking to host our Kapuni open meeting on Thursday, 15 November and our Tikorangi open meeting on Thursday, 5 December. Invitations will be out soon, and the Community team and I look forward to seeing those of you who can make it.

In the interim, if you have any questions or concerns about our activities, please contact the Community team on 0800 001 007.

Ngā mihi,
Mark

Water safety for Waitara Central tamariki

It's fantastic to see some of the Year 6 students from Waitara Central School participating in the Todd Energy-sponsored Water Safety Programme, facilitated at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre in New Plymouth.

Todd Energy has a long-standing partnership with the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC), together enabling tamariki from all over the region to learn to keep themselves safe in the water in their final year of primary school.

Celebrating 10 years of Taranaki Retreat

Taranaki Retreat recently celebrated its 10th anniversary - an incredible milestone, and one that was very suitably celebrated on World Suicide Prevention Day.

Todd Energy has been a long-time partner and support of Taranaki Retreat and its Waimanako support centre located in the hear of New Plymouth CBD. Together, these incredible community facilities offer hope and support when times are tough, and it was fantastic to be able to support the team in recognising their incredible mahi over the last ten years.

End of season celebrations for Okaiawa RFC

Todd Energy is a proud supporter of Okaiawa Rugby Football Club (RFC), the oldest rugby club in south Taranaki.

As sponsors of the Club's kids grade rugby - U7s, U8s, U10s and U11s - members of the Todd Energy team were recently invited to the end of season prizegiving and celebrations. It was a fantastic end to a "stellar season" with the highest levels of participation seen in a long time - even better, the Club was recognised for having the most girls playing this season, across all Taranaki clubs!

Check out just some of these incredible young sportspeople in the photos above.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

'Tradies Breakfast' - encouraging the next generation

Each year, Francis Douglas Memorial College (FDMC) hosts its 'Tradies Breakfast' - an event designed to offer students the chance to hear from a range of speakers - all FDMC old boys - who shared their different career pathways and offered a range of advice to the school's senior students.

Todd Energy has supported the 'Tradies Breakfast' event for a number of years. This year, our Environmental Advisor, Stephen Dobson, spoke at the event as well, sharing his experience and insights about his career in Todd Energy's Health, Safety and Environment team.

The school "received a lot of positive feedback" and was very appreciative of Todd Energy's continued support in encouraging the next generation into industry trades.

Te Kawa o Rongo

TANGATA WHENUA O TARANAKI

Empowering and inspiring young Māori to reach their potential

Te Kawa o Rongo Charitable Trust aims to mentor at-risk Māori boys aged between 10-17 in the Taranaki region. Its purpose is to educate, nurture and mentor Māori rangatahi, growing their understanding of Te Ao Māori, Tikanga Māori and their own whakapapa.

The Trust's programme brings rangatahi into a Marae setting, reconnecting them to their cultural identity, and using passionate and positive male Māori role models to teach leadership and encourage good decision making.

Todd Energy has recently entered into a new, multi-year partnership with the Trust, and is proud to be supporting this important kaupapa.

Check out some of the incredible photos above, showing these rangatahi in action. Ka rawe!

Global warming and greener burials at the Science Fair

The 2024 Elemental Group Taranaki Science & Technology Fair took place recently and, as sponsors, Todd Energy was invited to attend the event, with Todd Energy Senior Geophysicist, Roland Swift, flying the Todd Energy flag once more this year.

In his capacity as one of this year's judges, Roland made the difficult decision to split the Todd Energy prize between two projects pictured below:

  • Cleaner, greener burials - Lucas Jacobson (Stratford High School)
  • Global warming: which gas contributes the most to global warming - Ubed Hameed (New Plymouth Boys' High School)

Congratulations to Lucas and Ubed on their win, and to all participants in this year's event.

Trees for Survival planting in south Taranaki

The lovely tamariki from St Patrick's School in Kaponga joined us for one of the last Trees for Survival planting days for 2024, which took place on the school grounds in south Taranaki.

Together, the team planted 556 natives - not bad for a small (but perfectly formed) team of 16 tamariki, 8 adult helpers and three Todd Energy volunteers.

Todd Energy is now heading into its fourth year as a proud partner of Trees for Survival, bringing this environmental education programme into ten schools across both north and south Taranaki.

Community quiz night in north Taranaki

Last month, we hosted a Todd Energy community quiz night at the Manukorihi Golf Club in north Taranaki.

The evening provided a great opportunity for some of our neighbours and landowners in the wider Tikorangi community to come together, and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

Thanks to those who were able to join us!
